300

I got very excited since last year when I heard they're going to make a movie after the battle of Thermopylae. Why? It's one of the biggest battle that actually changed the way we looked at freedom, honour/honor & changed Ancient Greece. It also helped to shape the Roman Empire a few generations later.

I did my research--- Should Sparta be in our modern time era. They will be even better than US navy seals or any other army. Why? They started as young as 7 years of age and up to 30 years, where they retire. And they only choose the healthy ones; which reminds me of NS.... lol

But what made them so formidable is their formation. Their legion is actually extremely small in size. Back in ancient times; a legion is like a squad, a team. It's about 3,000. But the Sparta, they are only 300 in strength!!! Almost 1/10 of it! And can you imagine on the battle of thermopylae, they are only 300 of them and they had to break off to even little men in the legions! They stand in perfect straight lines, I think 5 by 6. With 4 rows. Holding short spears with their shields, the 2nd and 3rd rows put their spears on their comrades shoulders, making that formation as a mobile fortress of the day. Then the commander of the legion will give command to move forward towards the enemy to impale them with their spears.

The battlefield is the main key as well. It's a extremely narrow valley where the Sparta are defending.

Here are some links how the battle was fought.
